What is gingivitis and how is it caused?
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gingival (gums) around the teeth. Gingivitis may be caused by a build-up of plaque and tartar due to improper cleaning of the teeth. Tartar irritates the gums. Bacteria and toxins may cause the gums to become red, swollen and bleed easily. This can lead to bad breath, periodontal disease and tooth loss. Gingivitis is generally reversible. Brushing teeth thoroughly, but gently, with fluoride toothpaste and flossing are the best ways to prevent gingivitis.
How often should I floss my teeth?
You should floss your teeth at least twice daily; once in the morning and once in the evening. Flossing between your teeth removes food debris and plaque that a toothbrush cannot reach. Plaque causes tooth decay and can lead to gum disease. Recent studies indicate a link between periodontal disease and heart attacks, stroke and low birth-weight babies.
What causes bad breath?
According to recent dental studies, about 85% of people with persistent bad breath (Halitosis) have a dental condition that is to blame. These could be: gum disease, cavities, poor oral hygiene or bacteria on the tongue. Regular dental exams and professional cleanings plus daily flossing and brushing of the teeth and tongue can greatly reduce and possibly eliminate bad breath.
