While those are certainly important parts of the visit, your dentist is actually evaluating much more than most patients realize. 1. Screening for Oral Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most important parts of a dental checkup is the oral cancer screening. Even if your dentist doesn\u2019t specifically mention it, they are often checking for unusual changes in the soft tissues of your mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This includes examining the tongue, lips, gums, cheeks, roof and floor of the mouth, and your throat area.  Your dentist looks for sores, discoloration, lumps, or abnormal tissue changes that could indicate early signs of oral cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Evaluating Your Bite and Jaw Function<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your dentist is also paying attention to how your teeth fit together when you bite and chew. Bite problems can contribute to tooth wear, headaches, jaw discomfort, and muscle tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
